Keyword and Keyword Phrases Used To Position
Your WebSite for Maximum Sales
HOW to use your Keywords - Keyword Phrases
1. Relevancy
Search engines sort web pages in their databases by the keywords contained in each web page to later produce a search result. Because they do, it's crucial to make sure that the keywords you've chosen are implemented throughout your site.
This is very important, so always keep it in mind:
If you organize your keywords consistent with a search engine's ranking criteria, your ranking with that particular engine will go up. The ranking criteria differs from search engine to search engine.
2. Frequency of the keyword searched
How *often* does a keyword appear in a page's title, description, or body text? Include your keyword once in the title and description. With some engines, if you repeat a word too many times, you'll be penalized for "keyword stuffing."
3. Site popularity
How many other websites felt your site is important enough to link to. Why you should try to get other sites to link to yours. Search Engines spider your site for link popularity and may rank your site higher than your competitors simply because other are linking to your site. Consider asking for reciprocal linking, where if you link to them, they'll agree to link to you
Here's an idea for gaining links back to your site:
Visit AltaVista http://altavista.digital.com and type one of your competitor's URLs into the search screen without the "www" as follows: link:yourcompetitor.com /
This will tell you which sites have posted links to your competitor's website. Write to *those* websites and ask them to consider posting a link back to your website. After all, most of your competitors won't consider adding a link to your website, but those other websites that are linked to your competitor's website just might.
4. "Weight" of the keywords
Keyword "weight" refers to the number of keywords appearing on your webpage in relation to the total number of words appearing on that page. "Keep a 3 - 5 some 7% ratio"
One technique is to create a several small DOORWAY PAGEs, which emphasizes a particular keyword. By keeping the overall words on each page to a minimum, you'll increase the "weight" of the keyword you're emphasizing.
Important considerations: Don't provide detailed product or service information on your home page. Instead, design a page for each product and provide a brief description about the product/service and a link to that page from the home page. This will allow you to be more specific with your keywords for each product/service page and increase the "weight" of the keywords.
5. Proximity of keywords
This the placement of keywords on a webpage in relation to each other. EX: the connected phrase "stained windows" will outrank "stained glass windows" when the searched phrase is "stained windows."
6. Keyword placement very important
Keywords placed in the title of a page or the heading tags will give them more relevancy. In some engines, placing keywords in the link text can add more relevancy to those words. In a link text you would be using keywords in a hidden tag. example of this tag look at #11 under Tags
Where you choose to place keywords is up to you.
Just remember: How often and how early the keywords are placed will affect your ranking.
You need to include a keyword in as many places as you can to affect your site's relevancy in the Search Engines rankings.
TAGS:
- Keywords in the <TITLE>blue widgets</TITLE> tags
Title Tag: The title tag displays the name of the site that will appear in the top [Blue Border] of the browser. This is the most important HTML tag on your Web Site. MOST PEOPLE NEVER NOTICE THIS TEXT. Search Engines consider the text contained in the title a most significant tag. In this tag identify your site, make it sound interesting and worth visiting - while trying to get as many of your keywords into it as possible.
<TITLE> tag right after the <HEAD>tag
* several of the larger Search Engines will use the contents of your <TITLE> tag exactly as you compose it as their title for your site in the search results:
Such as: Infoseek - AltaVista - Lycos - Excite - WebCrawler
Sometimes you can gain an advantage by including more than one <TITLE> tag on a single page. However, Search Engines like AltaVista will remove your page if you use more than one title tag. Others have said that InfoSeek will also penalize pages that employ the multiple title tag technique. Therefore, use this technique with caution, and only after you've exhausted other techniques."
- Keywords in the <META NAME="DESCRIPTION"> Tags
Description Tag: Use this tag to write a powerful description - INTERESTING - COMPELLING - some Search Engines will use this tag instead of randomly selecting from your page. Do not use not more than 25 words. Note: not all Search Engines use this HTML tag
- Keywords in the <META NAME="KEYWORD">
Keyword Tag: This tag will give Search Engines keywords you would like your Web site to be returned for. Note: not all Search Engines use this HTML tag
When using the keyword META tag, try adding some break tags <BR> in your list of keywords sometimes this can help with relevancy.
- Keywords in the headline
The headline at the top of your page (H1, H2, etc.) Some Search Engines score keywords in headings. Heading usually explain a theme or section content.
- Keywords in the link tags,
The new pages on your site can be named with your key words in mind, such as: http://yourcompany.com/keyword_phrase.htm
Note: When you put your keyword phrases in your URLs, be sure to separate those phrases with a "-" or a "_" instead of running the keywords together. You should break the words up in some way, such as using dashes or underscores, so that the engines will see them as a phrase. If the words are not broken up in some fashion, the less then brilliant spiders will see the words as a single term. However, if the spider encounters the words separated by standard characters, it can recognize the terms as a phrase.
Example: http://www.yourcompany.com/round_blue_widgets.html.
- Keywords in the body
Some Search Engines retrieve the first 25 words in the body of your webpage to describe your site in the search results. Meaning that the 1st 25 words of your page should be keyword rich!
Begin page with *text* -- not an image.
Also, spread your keywords throughout the body of the page in natural sounding paragraphs, keeping some of them fairly close together. Put a keyword at the end of your body text as well.
Try putting your keywords in bold in your body text. Sometimes this boosts relevancy.
- Keywords in the ALT tags.
Web designers use this tag to describe the contents of a picture that hasn't loaded yet.
If your page doesn't contain graphics, or if you'd like an extra boost that can be provided with the ALT tags, what can you do? You can use the single pixel gif trick. Insert a tiny transparent graphic into your page, preferably near the top not at the top of the page for the best effect:
<IMG SRC="myimage.gif" HEIGHT="1" WIDTH="1" BORDER="0" ALT=keyword phrase">
You can use the single pixel gif trick even if you utilize other graphics on your page.
Important, name your gif or jpg a keyword. EX: blue widget - not bw2. If a browser has his graphics off, you'll be doing two things telling the person what the picture is and mentioning a keyword or keyword phrase.
- Keywords in the comment tag
Not a well received tag <!--insert comments here->
- Keywords in the a hidden tag: <INPUT TYPE="HIDDEN" NAME="HIDDEN" VALUE="include list of keywords here">
You can use more than one keyword phrase in the tag, but don't use too many to where you dilute the effectiveness of your important keyword phrase.-
- Keywords in hidden links.
Maybe you want to include hidden links to your doorway pages so that the engines will find them, but you don't want your visitors to see them on your main page. By including your keyword phrase in the URL, or in the ALT tag of the hidden links, you could boost your relevancy.
<A HREF="keyword_phrase.htm"><IMG SRC="myimage.gif" HEIGHT="1" WIDTH="1" BORDER="0" ALT="keyword phrase"></A>
For many of the engines, it's advantageous to include hidden links to all of your other pages on your home page, so that the engine's spider can crawl through your site.
However, if your site has a large number of links, this may not be practical.
In that case, you can create a table of contents or site map file that has links to all of the pages you want indexed. Then, on each of your pages, put a hidden link to the table of contents file. This may help you get more pages into some of the engines.
Do You Have to Make Changes in *All* of The Categories above?
No! In fact, you may want to test the waters by making changes in a few areas, then see how those changes affect your ranking before making additional changes. In this manner, you can easily see what works and what doesn't, and go from there.
Tips from the Pros:
Let's say you have 1000 pages in your site. Should you include META tags on every single page? A technical representative from an outside positioning company answered it this way:
"If you have the time, I recommend adding some META tags to any pages you consider important. Also, don't rely on a search engine spider to find all of your web pages. Take the time to submit your important pages. This will ensure that they are indexed in a timely fashion."
